Day 3 at Legg Mason and the injury bug was out. In early action, Latvian standout Ernests Gulbis lost the first set 6-1 only to retire a game in the second game of the second set to Ukrainian upstart Illya Marchenko. Alejandro Falla is continuing to make strides in his tennis game as he took the first set 7-5 and watched Lleyton Hewitt retire 3-2 into the 2nd.
Alejandra Falla, remembered for his 5 set defeat to Federer in the early rounds of Wimbledon has been focusing on the new hard court surface this summer. In LA he lost a grueling match to Andy Murray after having a set point.
For the second tournament in a row, Hewitt has exited after his first match. He had an decent showing this year at Wimbledon but fell to Novak Djokovic. It appears Rusty might be getting as rusty as he's not the speedy player we once was. Hewitt pulled off a shocking upset the week before Wimbledon by taking out Federer on grass in Halle, Germany but since then has done nothing note-worthy.
In other news at Legg Mason, Marcos Baghdatis was a straight set winner over Horacio Zeballos, both sets went to tiebreakers. David Nalbandian didn't have a difficult time taking out Swiss bred Stanislas Wawrinka, Marco Chiundinelli needed an hour and ten minutes to send veteran Radek Stepanek packing and Sam Querrey, winner last week in Los Angeles lost in straights to Janko Tipseravic. Tipseravic hit more aces than Sam 16-13 while Sam had his first serve percentage a bit higher. The late match had Tomas Berdych, Wimbledon runner-up take out Russian Dmitry Tursunov in three set in what most would call a sloppy affair.
